Question 1

Describe an activity you have participated in school and explain why the activity was interesting to you. Include details and examples to support your explanation.

Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

Sample answer

When I was in college, I once participated in a Taichi club. You know, Taichi is one type of Chinese Kung fu. At first, I just wanted to learn something without any specific purpose of learning it. After one-month's practice, I found playing Taichi could... um... not only make me healthier than before, but it could also make me keep calm most of the time. For example, before I played Taichi, I always felt dizzy every time I stood up. But, since I practiced it, this situation got better everyday. And also, before I played Taichi, I always felt very anxious when taking exams. But after I played it, I don't feel anxious anymore. So, I like Taichi very much and still practice it everyday.

Question 2

Some students think that native speakers of English make the most effective English teachers. On the other hand, others think the advantages of having a non-native English teacher outweigh the disadvantages. What do you think?

Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

Sample answer

In my opinion, the advantages of having a non-native English teacher outweigh the disadvantages. First of all, a non-native English teacher has a command of two languages. When they teach, they can use the two languages in class. In this way, students will have a good understanding of the class. Besides this, in a non-English-speaking environment, a non-native teacher has the same cultural background with the students, so she or he, may have an easy communication with students in terms of culture. Therefore, there is no cultural gap between them. Last but not least, since a non-native teacher was educated in the same political and educational environment, she or he may understand students' learning process of English better than a native teacher does. Because of all these, I think a non-native teacher may make a more effective teacher than a native one.

Question 3

Oklahoma State University is planning to charge students for taking the bus shuttle. Read the announcement about it from the president of Oklahoma State University. You will have 45 seconds to read the announcement.

Begin reading now.

Reading Time: 45 seconds

Announcement from the President

The university has decided to have all students pay for the shuttle bus, which will cost a quarter each time. A growing number of students have been enrolled since2000,and the limited number of school buses cannot meet students' needs. To address this problem, the university has purchased 10 new buses this year, which has cost the school millions of dollars. So, the university has to ask all the students to share this burden. But we have also a new commitment to provide all the students with the best services to better satisfy our students' needs.

Now listen to two students as they discuss the announcement.

The man expresses his opinion of the announcement made by the university president. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

These two students complain about the new regulation of Oklahoma State University. The new regulation requires all students to pay for the school bus. They are strongly against it. According to the listening material, there are two reasons for their disagreement. The first reason is that...um...one of the students thinks a quarter per time is too expensive. As he points out, he might have to spend a couple of hundred dollars each semester. Another reason is that, as the other student points out, it's a waste of time. Since every time when they pay for the bus fare, they have to prepare quarters, take them out and give them to the drivers. And if they happen to take no quarter coins with them, they have to wait for the driver to give back them their change. So, it's going to waste a lot of their time. Because of these two reasons, these two students disagree with this new regulation.

Question 4

Now read the passage about population and resources. You will have 45 seconds to read the passage

Begin reading now.

Reading Time: 45 seconds

Population and Resources

Population increase and decrease relatively not only to one another, but also to natural resources. The growing poverty constitutes a permanent menace not only to peace, but also to democratic institutions and personal liberty. For overpopulation is not compatible with freedom. Labor is more abundant than goods, and the individual is compelled to work long hours for little pay. Democracy is, among other things, the ability to say " no " to the boss . In an overcrowded country , very few people own enough to make them financially independent; without financial independence, saying"no" to the boss will almost be impossible.

Now listen to part of a lecture on this topic in a sociology class.

The professor describes the disadvantages of overpopulation. Describe the disadvantages of overpopulation in both the reading and listening passages and explain how unemployment caused by overpopulation results in people's loss of freedom.

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

According to the two passages, overpopulation has many disadvantages. It will do harm to natural resources. With more and more people born on the earth, they will use more and more land, water and other natural resources. And so, the earth has to take more and more burdens humans bring to it. In this case, humans will face more pressure of existence. In addition to this disadvantage, with more and more people consuming limited resources, they will become poorer and poorer. This, in turn, will bring about economic imbalance and social disturbance. That is to say, some people will become richer and richer and others poorer and poorer . If there is too large a gap between people in terms of wealth, the society will be in great danger. Specifically, the society will have a series of problems in relation to employment, education, social welfare and so on. For example, many people will not be able to find jobs. And, many people will not be educated and get enough social welfare. If things are like this, the society will be in danger of social turmoil.

Above all, overpopulation will lead to people's loss of freedom. As it has been said above, overpopulation will take a lot of people's jobs. From another perspective, overpopulation will result in a surplus supply of labor force. So, there will be more people than goods. Thus, some people will be forced to work long hours for little pay. According to the reading passage, democracy or freedom is the ability to say " no " to the boss . If the boss has much freedom to use labor , the workers will not have freedom to refuse the boss . In this case , people will not have much freedom .

Question 5

Now listen to a conversation between two students.

One student tells his problem to the other and the other discusses two possible solutions to the problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

With respect to the conversation, Quan's problem is that he is terribly nervous about exams. So, he feels dizzy and hot all over every time when there is an exam. According to his doctor,he doesn't need to take any medicine for all the symptoms he has. His friend Mike offers him two solutions to his problem. One is that he should not take the results of the exams into too much account. Instead, he should take the results easy. The other is to have his eyes closed and think of nothing for a minute or two just before starting an exam. As for me, I would prefer the first solution, since the root of this problem is that Quan thinks too much of the results of the exams, he must feel too much tension and thus too nervous about exams. So, in order to get rid of this problem, he should be fully prepared for the exam every time. And before each exam, he should tell himself that he has tried his best and there is nothing to be has that the has the has the has the the the results of the exams do not count too much. In this way, he can cope with the problem.

Question 6

Now listen to part of a talk in a linguistics class.

Using points and examples from the talk, explain what the critical period hypothesis is and what evidence is mentioned in the talk to support this hypothesis.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time : 60 seconds

Sample answer

According to the talk, the critical period hypothesis states that there is a critical period for language acquisition in first language acquisition. This period is biologically determined. In a specific manner, it is believed that languages could be more easily acquired during a period of one's life and it will become very difficult for one to acquire the languages when one passes this period. This period is said to be somewhat under 12 and 13 years and over 6 and 7. Two pieces of evidence are cited in the talk: one is Genie and the other is Helen Keller. Genie was an American girl. She was locked in a room by her father at about 2 years old and had nobody to talk to since then . When she was discovered , she was about 13 years old . Although linguists had tried to teach her languages , she only knew a limited vocabulary and could not grasp any language. The reason for this is said to be that she had already passed the critical period. The other example is Helen Keller. She was born blind and deaf and did not learn to talk until she was 7 years old. Unlike Genie, she grasped languages, which was believed to be because she was still under the critical period of acquiring languages when she started to learn languages.
