有些批评家说,中国的文人学士,尤其是诗人,都带着很浓厚的额废色彩,所以中国的诗文里,须赞秋的文字特别的多。但外国的诗人,又何尝不然?我虽则外国诗文念得不多,也不想开出账来,做一篇秋的诗歌散文钞,但你若去一翻英德法意等诗人的集子,或各国的诗文的文选来,总能够看到许多关于秋的歌须与悲啼。各著名的大诗人的长篇田园诗或四季诗里,也总以关于秋的部分,写得最出色而最有味。足见有感觉的动物,有情趣的人类,对于秋,总是一样地特别能引起深沉、画远、严厉、萧索的感触来的。不单是诗人,就是被关闭在牢狱里的因犯,到了秋天,我想也一定会感到一种不能自已的深情;秋之于人,何尝有国别,更何尝有人种阶级的区别呢?不过在中国,文字里有一个“秋士”的成语,读本里又有着很普遍的欧阳子的《秋声》与苏东坡的《赤壁赋》等,就觉得中国的文人,与秋的关系特别深了。可是这秋的深味,尤其是中国的秋的深味,非要在北方,才感受得到底。

Among the long pastoral poetry or the four season poetry written by every famous poet, the best and the most flavorous parts are about autumn. This shows that in all sensitive animals and emotional humans alike, autumn is particularly capable of arousing feelings of depth, remoteness, severity and bleakness. When autumn comes, not only poets, even convicts in prison, I suppose, have uncontrollable deep sentiments. Autumn treats all humans alike, regardless of nationality, race or class. Here in China, however, we have in our literature the term "autumn scholar". And in our school textbooks, essays like Ouyang Xiu's Ode to the Autumn Sound and Su Dongpo's A Visit to the Red Cliff frequently appear.

This cannot but lead us to the conclusion that Chinese men of letters are particularly attached to autumn.

 

难点注释

 

1.画线部分第一句中的“有味”一词在英文中对应的词有tasty,flavorous等,翻译时应注意选用最恰当的词,相较而言,此处用flavorous较合适。

 

2.画线部分第二句翻译时,需要注意“有感觉的动物”中的“有感觉的”翻译时究竟用sensible还是sensitive,区别在于前者指“理性的,明事理的”,而后者指“敏感的,神经过敏的”。后文提到,秋天能让它们生起各种感触,因此应该用sensitive表达动物在情绪上也是敏感的。同样,“有情趣的人类”不是指“有性情志趣的人”而是“有情感的、情绪丰富的人”,因此,这两个合并译作 all sensitive animals and emotional humans。

 

3.画线部分第三句是由分号隔开的两个分句,翻译时可以将其拆分成两个独句,其中“被关闭在牢狱里的因犯”可译作prisoners/convicts in jail/prison;“感到一种不能自已的深情”可译作have uncontrollable deep sentiments。

 

4.画线部分第四句中,“秋士”是古汉语,指“士之暮年不遇者”,即an aged scholar grieving over frustrations in his life,但这里不必解释得这么详细,译作autumn scholar 即可;“欧阳子的《秋声》”即“欧阳修所作的《秋声赋》”,译为Ouyang Xiu's Ode to the Autumn Sound;《赤壁赋》是苏东坡借秋游赤壁,抒发自己的人生感慨时所作,译为A Visit to the Red Cliff 或 On the Red Cliff。
